Port Shepstone Twinning Association

Social Cohesion

Since the inception of the Association, great value has been placed on non-racialism and the
building of unity among people. Through our long-standing partnership with Sweden, we
have facilitated numerous international exchanges across a wide range of projects and
programmes.

A careful and deliberate effort has been made to select delegates for these exchange
programmes in a way that reflects the diversity of our society, ensuring balanced
representation from both urban and rural communities. Over the past 30 years, more than 300 exchanges have taken place, involving professionals, learners, and community members.

As part of our internal programme, we actively encourage interaction and cultural exchange
within our own communities — visiting one another’s homes, sharing experiences, and
learning about different cultures and traditions. This natural progression, grounded in friendship and genuine connection, continues to strengthen relationships and deepen mutual
appreciation.

These exchanges have fostered lasting friendships, helping to break down racial barriers and
promote mutual understanding, respect, and unconditional acceptance. This enduring
commitment to unity and shared humanity remains at the core of our work, underpinning all
our programmes, projects, and development initiatives.

Late Pauline Duncan captured the significance of our twinning programme:

“ Ive been trying to find the words to tell concisely the story of the twinning, our time with
you and hope for the future. And when I find them, I wish I could bottle them and give them to
the whole world because if the world had this recipe for the unconditional love and
acceptance that is our twinning, think how wonderful it would be for everyone and for the
future generations”
