About Us

Our History

Before South Africa’s democracy, Port Shepstone faced significant political and social unrest, which drew international concern. This led to visits from Swedish delegations, sparking a partnership that led to the founding of the Port Shepstone Twinning Association in 1994, promoting long-term collaboration.

Roots in Struggle and Solidarity

The political violence in Port Shepstone prior to 1994 caught the attention of international observers, including Sweden, fostering a sense of solidarity and support.

Swedish Engagement Begins

A 1993 Swedish delegation initiated dialogue with South African political and civil society leaders, laying groundwork for deeper cooperation.

Formation of the Twinning Association

In 1994, a delegation from Oskarshamn led to the creation of the Port Shepstone Twinning Association, formally established with its own constitution to promote sustained partnership.
